“It is forbidden for foreign workers to go outside after 8 p.m.”
The other day I drove past this banner hanging outside a village, on Mt. Lebanon. The curfew is intended for Syrian refugees in the Lebanese village, and apparently it’s not the only one. Back at the place where I’m staying, in Bchamoun, it’s also illegal for Syrian refugees to walk outside after 8 p.m.
According to HRW’s numbers from last year, at least 45 municipalities across Lebanon have imposed such curfews.
Although the curfews appear to be illegal under Lebanese law, they are still maintained in the areas by the Municipal police and “contributes to a climate of discriminatory and retaliatory practices against the Syrian refugees.”
